Hello-
I am trying to find info on a cultivator I would like to use on a small garden. I own a JD 830 diesel utility tractor. I am planing on using it on a 1 to 2 acre garden. Because of the small size I am not too worried about the number of passes I need to make. I would appreciate any info given regarding models and manufacturers. Searching the archives seemed to suggest that the trend in farming is going away from cultivating but it is still a good tool for small plots - any thoughts? I would like to find something used if possible. I was also wondering is it worth the extra money for a rig wide enough to break up behind one or both of the tires or would a small setup that only loosens behind the tractor work OK. The tractor has a 3pt, is there an advantage to the 3pt cultivator or would a drag cultivator also work out?
Thanks
Tom in western NY

No matter what you're talking about, you want it to be at least as wide or slightly wider than the tractor so you dont leave a track.

Tom, you can a one row cultivator at many farm stores that will work just fine, Thats what i use in my garden. They are 3 point hook-up.

Please clarify what you are after. "Cultivating" to me means killing weeds between the rows, a cultivator normally mounts on the tractor or hitch and only makes a single pass. I think you are talking about what I would call "tillage", or preparing the soil for planting with a plow, disk, and/or harrow. If that's what you mean, a pull behind 6-8 foot wide disk and a cultipacker or spike harrow is plenty to get you going. A disk that mounts on a small tractor's hitch is too light. Add a moldboard plow later. Two acres is a lot of garden! Are you going into the truck market business?

I too am unsure if he means 'row cultivator' or 'field cultivator'. Where I live there are few 'small' field cultivators, they are 12' or more, 10' at least. I guess I see new things at the farm stores, but I tend to feel these things are too light to toy with.
