How do I limit the lateral movement of my 3 point hitch ? I use CAT 1 implements. Also is it better to have a little lateral play in your hitch while brushogging, or should it be solid ? My tractor is an International 404. Does International make a stabilizer for this ? If so, where do I get one ?

Adam: I know about 404 IHs, nice tractors, but I don't know specifically how their stabilizer system works. This will vary by tractor make. For instance, some tractors rely on chain tightening for stabilization (like my 1968 Case 430) others use stabilizer bars (like my hobby Fords, 8N and NAA). I wonder if your 404 is a factory 3 pt. or a conversion. Either way you need to get the owner's manual and learn what's correct for your rig. Click on top left of this page for manuals.

On our Ferguson 50 I put cross chains with turnbuckles on the 3-pt arms themselves. You can tighten up the turnbuckles tight to eliminate all sway, and not have any binding because the whole thing moves as a unit. Weld lugs (I actually found some really heavy shoulder eye bolts, so I drilled holes) on the insides of both lift arms, one near the attachment end, and one near the tractor end. Make sure they won't hit anything as the arms move up and down. Use 3/8 HT chain from the front lug on the left to the rear lug on the right, and vice versa. Put a turnbuckle in each chain for adjustment, and for the attachment/removal of implements. For a slightly neater appearance, if you don't want the chains to cross, you actually go from front lug to back lug on each side and then connect the center of the two chains with a heavy quick-link.

It's either bars or chains or both.

The stabilizer bars usually mount to
attachment points fairly well outboard and under
the rear axle.... often about where the fenders mount.

Stabilizer chains usually mount to points on the differential housing at about the same level as the pto shaft. They don't provide as much triangulation as the bars.

Both chains and bars need quick-connect pins at the outboard ends so you can get your 3 point
to spread and shift around for mounting your implements. The length of the bars/chains have to be adjusted so they do have some 'give' in them so you're not hooked up rock solid... and the hitch can be raised and lowered properly.

Personally, I think the bars are the best way to go (stronger, more stabilization). Just about essential for heavy duty 3 point bush hogging, rotary tilling etc..

hope this helps.

You may be able to use sway bars on your tractor. I'm not familiar with IH. I had a Ford 3000 that used a sway bar to limit this movement. My new JD uses sway chains.
