I have a 5' bush hog, the gearbox bolts are loose which caused bolt holes to crack. I'm trying to remove the gearbox so that I can get the cracks welded. I have removed the large bolt and washer which holds the gearbox to the stump jumper on, from the bottom of the unit. I have beat tugged and heated the shaft to try to get the splined ( I think it's splined) shaft loose from the stump jumper. I can't get the gearbox off because the nuts holding the bolts are located under the stump jumper. The only suggest a friend had was to weld the gearbox to the frame and put the nut and washer back on and forget about it. But I would like to be able to replace the gearbox if anything happened to it, plus I would never be able to replace the blades if need be! Anybody got any suggestions.

Same problem except I was just trying to change blades. I put blocks under my cutter so that it would be solid when I came down with my sledge hammer. I beat till I was blue-faced. I took the blades back. Weld the gear box. You can take a grinder and take the weld off if you need to. The best way to sharpen the blades is to bevel them with a torch. The carbon in the cutting process will harden the blades. It works better than using a grinder. Hope this helps you.

See T-Boy's post below about the blade carrier, some good ideas there. Dave
