How much does a baler compress the hay?

I currently have about 2 to 3 acres of land that I put Hay up on. I just put it up loose since that is the cheapest thing to do. However My little barn is bulging at the seams with Hay and was wondering how much more hay do you get in the barn by using a baler? Now I realize there are many variables in this, but lets assume we get a 100 pound bale out of the baler.
Any thoughts.

Like otheres said 50 lb bales give or take some would be about right. Depending on what kind of hay land you have you could get anywhere from maybe 20 to 70 or more bales an acre.

Baled hay should be about 2 or 3 times as dense as loose hay. Also, it stores more efficiently because it stacks much more neatly.

We used to put it both ways.

There is a 13 acre hay field east of my farmhouse in East Central Indiana. First cutting was mid-June with around 100 bales per acre. If we get in 3 days of drying before baling, weight is around 50-60 pounds. The second cutting was the last week in July this year. We got 65 bales per acre with an average weight of 50 pounds. If we continue to get rain we should beable to cut again in late September. It is hard telling what the yield will be at this point in time.

Marvin. just for your info.. I stack 100 bales 50-65lbs on a 8x18 foot trailer 4 deep which equals not quiet 6 feet high. I can get about2-3 trailers off 2-4 acres depending on the year.. sometimes better yield sometimes worse...may give you an idea...

I'd expect small bales to weigh 40-50 pounds. As a very rough estimate of how much room it will take, you should be able to stack about one acre's production of hay on a wagon when it's baled, so try to envision how 2 or 3 wagon's worth of baled hay would fit in your barn. Your mileage may vary...

For most two-string small square balers, it would be more realistic to assume a 50 lb. bale.

With that weight, I would venture that if baled, your hay would take up half or less of the space that it now takes up loose.
