How thick of stuff can a sickle bar mower cut?

Hey all,

I'm considering getting and using a sickle bar mower to mow along the sides of a stream bed on my farm, since my belly mower doesn't quite get to the edge (and it's a 3 foot drop for me on the tractor if I get too close!). Question is, some of the stuff growing along the stream bed is grassy plants, some is brush - thorny plants, light climbing vines (thin), etc...nothing wider than 1/4 inch as best I can tell. What do you folks think of using a sickle bar mower for this? Anyone have any other ideas on how to do tihs safely and with minimal damage to myself or my tractor?

Thanks
Pete in PA

I go through blackberry vines, saplings up to 1/2 in or so with our 9W mower every summer with no problem. Steel fence posts, saplings just big enough to fit through the rock guards...problem.

I once had a very interesting experience mowing along a river bank. If I was to do it again, especially with the sickle bar facing toward the creek rather than away from it, which is what saved my butt, I would first walk along the bank. I would be very, very sure that there were no gullies or sags that the tractor could fall into and start rolling toward the creek. Or rocks or other sudden protrusions that might throw the rig toward the creek.

The safety of it all will depend on you. Mowing along a bank is a hazzard, and if the mower bar hangs up on a rock or something, it will want to pull the front of the tractor in.

However, that is the way to do it, and you should not have problems cutting shrubs & such up to 1/2 an inch.

I do not understand the guy who made the comment about it being better than driving parallel to the bank???

I had a field with a lot of blackberries in it that were about 6 or 7 foot tall and about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter. The sickle bar mower on my Super A was able to handle it without problems. When you get in plants that are more woody, the size goes down to about and 1/8 inch. First time through you may need to go in an hand cut any larger woody plants, but the sickle bar mower should handle the rest of the stuff. Keep the speed up on the engine so that the sickle is running as fast as possible.
Using a sickle bar is better way to go than trying to mow parallel to the bank.
Good luck and let us know how it worked.

I cut a field this summer that hadn't been cut in 40 years, some of the younger bushes and trees (up to 3/4" in diameter) I mowed over using a New Idea sickle trailer mower.later while cutting along the road, I learned a lesson..I allow the blade to hang over the edge of the ditch,BAD MOVE,because of the bowing of the unsupported bar,I tore up some blades and rock guards as the mower chewed on it self. Thanks goodness it was only a $20.00 auction mower.Good luck,It should make your job easier with the sickle.

We once put a tractor and sickle mower on a flatbed truck and used it to trim a hedge
