I have a JD 45 combine in relitivly good working original condition. Problem, the paint is flaking off in spots, and surface rust is gaining ground. How can I help slow/stop this process. I would prefer to preserve the original finish.

On sheet metal areas , you can use used motor oil with a dab of diesel fuel to thin applied with a paintbrush(mixed up in an old coffee can), then wipe off excess with rags, this will help slow down rust , just as it slows down wear on moving parts such as chains, sickles, etc.
My own experience, other ideas I would like to hear about to preserve some of my old machinery in orig. work clothes.

Try Ospho. It's a rust remover/primer that many paint shops carry. My experience is that it won't affect the paint, but will convert the rust into something that won't rust as easy as bare metal.

Try it on a small spot, to make sure it's not going to lift the original paint.

If you can't find any locally, marine hardware supply houses typically carry it. I've been dealing with Jamestown Distributors for years, you can get it from them.

Try putting grease gun grease on it. WD-40 might work, but it tends to run or dry off. Better yet, put it in an enclosed structure. Just a tarp over it helps a lot
