Could anyone tell me if a 9N ford tractor will operate any a hay bailer, if so what kind? And where might a man start to look for one? Thank you Bill

My 2 Cents: I've got a 48 8N, and a small very-hilly property. I bought a Massey-Ferguson 10 baler a few months ago...it's a small PTO-driven square-baler about 35 years old.

Tractor pulls it fine, even though the baler outweighs the tractor by about 600 lbs. In wet weather, stepping on the brakes will cause the tires to lock up, so I run down-hill in 1st gear. Other than that, the 8N has adequate power, but no excess: I don't think you could pull a wagon behind the baler.

MF dealer carries most parts, though right now I'm having trouble finding a knotter hook that I broke last week--apparently they 'never' break, so MF stopped stocking them.

IMPORTANT: You must have an over-running clutch on your PTO or the baler will drive you. They've got big flywheels on 'em, and without the ORC the baler will push your N even after you step on the brakes and push in the clutch...embarassing, especially if you're headed toward a fence or ditch.

good luck,
Tom

If you get an engine powered baler you can also pull it with a pick up or whatever you have. Going slow is hard on an automatic trans though. I, ve got a NH 66 and have done it. That air cond feels good

If there is anyone out there that has a picture of an old "baler" or hay machine that has a self powered moter on it I would appreciate it if you would email me a picture of it. and also a picture of an old NH 66, 67, or 68 with or without self powered motor. Thanks Bill in Oklahoma

Like others said a Deere 14T or NH 68 or newer should work for you. I will bet you will want it engine powered rather than PTO.

I will also bet that if you have hills at all you wind up looking for a bigger tractor.

I bought a JD 24T to run behind my 8N and like Paul said, it weighed more than the tractor. The pasture I was going to bale was nearly flat but I had to go down a long incline to get to it and back up it to get home. While testing out the baler in the yard, I watched it push the 8N along with both brakes set. The plunger has so much inertia behind it that it really was rocking the 8N. I ended up finding a '64 2000 with live power that used to run the baler. The live power really made a difference in keeping the baler from stalling when it would feed in too much hay.

If you do decide to try it, just be careful and go SLOW.

Bill the 9N will run purt nigh any small square bailin muhseen.

Just be sure you have an over run pto clutch on it. That way when it chokes down from over feeding and kills your engine it won't break the shear bolts out of the baler.

I would prefer to find a New Holland bailer of some sort. Parts are usually easier to find and NH service folks have better attitudes than JD folks.

You can usually find and old bailer at farm equipment awkshuns, or out by a neighbors shed, that are in decent shape for from $200 on up to whatever you want to spend.

If you have a friend who knows anything about what to look for in old bailers it would be a good idea to carry them along.

Your tractor is too small to run a round bailer so don't get suckered in. Good luck.

I see this mistake quite often on these boards. The hay machine is a "baler". The machine that packs materials together at a recycling center is also a "baler". "Bailing" is providing money to let someone be released from jail. "Bailing" also refers to other things too numerous to mention here. Hopes this helps to keep things in perspective.

If "you mean baler I believe" wants to be precise, a "jail" is something you have say in Dodge City for confining prisoners. In England the correct spelling is gaol, and someone who works there is a gaoler. Seriously, does it matter about the spelling, we all know, or should do what the original query was about?

I'm a horrible speller, and overlook spelling errors. However, I've seen this one very often of late myself, & am glad someone mentioned it. Not real important, but the implement is a baler.

Huh, and all these years I thought a 'bailer' was someone who put handles on buckets...

I am sorry that I did not use the right context for the word "baler"or bailer, but I did'nt know that the english police would be all over me. But there might be a few people out there like you that know the difference between bail and bale, you know, jail and all. Bill in Oklahoma This is in reply to,"you mean baler"

Please replace the word "boards" with "forums" to be precisely correct.

I helped run a BBS, and used fidonet so 'boards sonds good to me....

A n tractor is on the boarder line of pulling a baler. Look for smaller old New Holland or JD balers, other older brands might work and are cheaper, but they often don't tie as well, which is what a baler is all about. NH 68 or newer is nice. (Or JD t-14 I hear.)

Some have their own engine on the baler, you might like that, but it is one more engine to keep running. It would help with power & the non-live pto tho.

If you have hilly ground, be careful, the baler will weigh about as much as the tractor, hard to control it. It is doubtful you want to pull a hayrack along, that would be too much weight.
