I need a front end loader, but many are $3000 new.
Any suggestions of a good brand I can install. I want a light one, but everything made for a JD 4020 is heavy.

Just some friendly advice. We have a loader on a mid-size Oliver with plenty of power to tear it up. I don't think you want a light one on a 4020 as it will bend and twist with that much pushing it, that's why the ones you've seen are heavy. dwm

Good advice. Look for a used JD 158 loader with mounts for 4000-series tractors (4010, 4020, 4320, etc.) There are also Du-Al, Westendorf, Farmhand, and Bush Hog loaders, among others, that can be found used. Sometimes a tractor parts yard may get a tractor in for salvage that happens to have a good loader on it. Also, be aware that if your 4020 is a synchro-range and not a power-shift, it may not make the best loader tractor. Synchros do not hold up to loader work all that well, especially if the transmission already has some wear on it. Speaking from experience with a 2510 and 148 loader.

Thanks guys for the information. Tell me how a 4020 syncro will not hold up. I bought this tractor in May, thinking the syncro transmission was solid, that the powershift could run into dollars if repairs were needed.
Also keep in mind that I am a weekend farmer and not going to do much loader work. I hope the transmission will handle my lightwork.

If you're only doing light work, you should be ok. Notice all the stuff that has to move and line up with the synchro shift lever? When used a lot, this stuff gets loose and the little pins in there wear or break, which makes it difficult to line up your gears. (that was the problem with that 2510.) People in a hurry with the loader also often bump the lever into R1 from 1st or 3rd or R2 from 2nd or 5th before waiting for the tractor to stop rolling. This causes gear clash and the resulting wear can lead to reverse gear failure. My neighbor's 4020 was an ex-loader tractor. It's R1 gear was chewed off and the tractor could only be backed up in R2.

Power Shift is suprisingly durable, considering how complicated it is, except that the early PS trannys are known for PTO failure.

BTW, my 4020 Synchro has been modified with an R3 on the same shift station as 4 and 7. Normally this gear is locked out, but a previous owner went in there and removed the stop.
