I have a '52 8N that prior to my purchasing it several years ago had been converted to 12 volts. Some time back it started making a squeeling noise when it was started. I could let back on the throttle and it would stop and then if I gradually increased power it wouldn't start again. It's been getting slowly worse and now squeels a lot more. I'm assuming it is the alternator but unsure if it's possible that something else is making the noise (like a wate pump or ???). So I have two questions: First, is it likly that the alternator is the problem and how can I be sure, and Second, what's the best way to go about getting a new alternator and how do I know what I've got since it was converted from the orginal 6 volt set up. Thanks for your help.

Although it's probably the belt slipping, bad bearings are another likely cause. You can usually detect a bad bearing by taking the belt off of the alternator and spinning it by hand. A bad bearing will feel rough, or "dry".

An alternator rebuild shop can probably supply you with the parts that you need. They'll recognize the alternator when you bring it in. Most of the generator conversions are Delco internal regulator alternators, just because they're available and easy to adapt.

While you have the alternator apart, check the diodes. If you don't know how, the rebuilder can do it. Alternators with one or two blown diodes will still charge, so you should alway check them out.

If the belt is slipping, you can usually replace the pulley on the alternator, but the trick of using a wider belt works just as well.

If it's easy to get the belt completely off, take it off and then start the engine. If the noise isn't there it's probably coming from the alternator. Many times the belt is running the water pump too, so the noise could be from one or both of those items.

Most likly the belt is slipping. Often the tractor pully and alternator are differant withs(size),so the belts slip with small amounts of wear. I would loosen belt and turn parts by hand to see if they are free and not loose bearings. If ok and it's keepping battery up(chargeing). then alternator is ok. try to find a slighty wider belt to replace the one you have. The bottem of pully groove will be shinney if belt is too small. Its possible the alternator is over chargeing check for overheating.

I concurr with Larry. Check the belt first. You may want to try some belt dressing spray in the meantime. If the noise stops, buy a new belt.

Thanks for the advise. It turns out it was the belt. The bottom of the pulley groves were shiney so I put on a wider belt and it solved the problem.
