Here's some pix of a homebuilt logging arch I made. I use a portable (mounts to a standard 2" hitch receiver) Ramsay winch as the power source, and 5/16" wire rope through sheaves front and rear to lift both ends of a 16' log clear of the ground. Hubs are from the rear axle of a GM midsize, backbone is 6" Schedule 40 steel pipe, the rest is whatever was laying on my scrap pile. I made a couple of chokers out of some chain with a snatch hook on one end and a ring on the other. I loop the chain around the log and through the ring, and then hook the snatch hook on the lift cables to whatever link gives the best fit, hit the winch button, and PRESTO!, I can haul it out of the woods, and down the road or anywhere I want to go with out tearing up the roads or dragging the log in the dirt.

Link is to some detail shots.

Very nice! You should draw up a set of plans and sell them for a few bucks apiece.

I've only hauled a couple of logs with it so far, but the concept seems sound. One thing I've noticed, I should have built it about a foot higher. As it is, the butt of a 30" log JUST clears the ground when it's snugged up against the front pulley. 16" rims and tires would be better too. It's got 14's off the Olds Cierra I swiped the hubs from.
