Just mounted a Mott D9 flail mower to my new 1953 Farmall Cub. I can have knives rotate in either direction. Should they rotate the same direction as the tires or in the opposite direction?? Thanks for the help.

Bill:

I just purchased a 48" flail for my '58 Cub. It's a 1-pt rear mount.

I love the cut. I replaced all the knives and clevis pins first. Mine rotates the same direction as the tires. I'll be hard pressed to consider a rotary mower for my fields again.

Normally, the cutter shaft should turn the same direction as the tires. This will pick up the grass that the tires have run over for a clean cut.

The reverse direction is for mulching, for instance if you have leaves that you want to chop up.

I used to have a Mott mower with a Farmall 200, it rotated same direction as the tires. Those things can really cut through weeds and brush but will be bogged down in heavy grass. I'd be concerned about throwing things out the front (at the driver) with it rotating the other way.
