I have come across a good buy on a 6' bush hog and was wondering if a ford 600 tractor would handle it

Definitely go with the 6'. The tip speed of the blades is much higher, plus, you can mow closer to the fences, since it is the same width as your tractor.

Depends,-- on what your cutting. On my 601, I have a 5 foot hog.In heavy grass I could sometimes use more power,in lighter conditions I wish I had a 6 foot. You can always cut a narrower swath in heavy conditions.I had the same hog on an 8N and it did the job too.
If you go by that 10 hp/foot rule, an 8n would need a 2 foot cutter! I don't think so.

Come on George...read between the lines. I wasn't referring to garden tractors and mowers for the front yard. The rule of thumb is as stated for 50+ hp tractors and 5' and wider mowers.

Come on Dave, 75% of your HP recommendation will be better than adequate in almost all conditions. The last 3 Bush Hog 2615's (15') sold @ the dealership I work for went behind tractors of UNDER 85 PTO HP, not 150 & up. TC33's are regularly sold with SQ600's behind (5') and they are just under 30 PTO HP.

Rick, I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with Dave, if he wants to waste 50 hp on a 5 foot cutter, it's his fuel and time. I'm just saying what works for me and everyone else I know.

You'll need 10 horsepower per foot of cut.
