We have a JD 3 bottom, 3 point, CAT II plow at my dads we are trying to identify.

Has two gauge wheels. One large on left front of plow, one small on back that rides in furrow. Also has a handle to adjust depth of plow. It rotates the arms where the 3pt. pins are.

Can you tell me where to find a number or tag? I will try to take a couple of pics this weekend and make them available.

He wants to fix the tires, paint it and then sell it. We were told it was used on a JD 2040. . .

thanks for all of your help

You're plow is a lot older than a 2040!
You didn't tell the cut but its probably 14 or 16 inch cut. It was built to use behind the bigger 2 cylinder Deeres of the late forties, early fifties. Probably early fifties model 60 or 70.
Paint the guage wheel including hub yellow; leave the guage bar that it's attached to green. Paint the furrow wheel and hub yellow; bearing shaft and rest green.

Okay, so it could be a model 60 or 70, is that dependent on 14 or 16 in. shear?

Where do you measure to determing size?

Also, are there any casting marks or tags that would be useful in the identification of the implement? Something that would positively identify the date?

Thanks for the lead tom!

I didn't mean a model 60 or 70 plow. I meant it was probably made to be pulled by a 60 or 70 John Deere tractor. Not sure of the plow model as I have a couple like it and I can't identify them positively either. I do know the large guage wheel is there 'cause the older Deeres didn't have draft control until the fifties sometime.

Measure center to center between the straight beams and it should be close to one or the other.

Sounds like a model 812 or 813. 812 was a shear-bolt trip-bottom plow, 813 was a spring-roller safety trip-bottom plow. The 813 has what looks like a latch protruding slightly from the back of each beam.
