I also posted this on the unoffical AC page, but you guys helped me a lot on my JD 14t Baler and now I need to fix my Dad's he bought a AC 303 baler, I dont know much about it, except that he says the knotters are wore out, he paid too much for it, and know cant find parts, any suggestions? on how we can fix this? how about a manual? Is this a bad baler, should we scrap it and go with a better one? the problem of course is we are looking at spending less than $500 on a used one, he only bales 30 ac a year.

An AC hay equipment expert, Harrell Sellers, once told me that knotter parts for most AC balers are the same as NH balers like the Super 68. Maybe find a parts book or copy of the knotter page for an old NH and you may be able to match up parts. I'm not really familiar with the AC hay equipment line, but their first square baler was made in England, and that one is different than the later models. I hope the 303 isn't the English built baler for your sake.

BTW, for 30 acres of hay, I'd spend more than $500 for a baler. What's your yield? I bale 40 acres a year, and get 5000 bales. I use a JD 336. Gear driven knotter. Much less trouble than old chain-driven knotters.

I dont know what my Dad has gotten this year, its been a bad year for hay here near Kansas City, I bale 17 acres and only got @ 300 bales the 1st cutting and looks like I wont get a second, bad drought and bad weeds, I expected 800-900 per cutting. my JD14t, works great for that, its my MF 31 sickle mower I would love to shove in the fence row.... around here a JD 336 would go around $2000+ just for the color, need to fix up the AC 303 for him if possible, he only bales enough for his 40 head of cattle, and we live more than 3 hours apart so I would hate to share a baler between us...so were kinda stuck with what we got for at least the next season. BTW, What do you do to get 5000 bales??? what kind of hay? do you fertlize, what about week control? I did a lot of hay down central MO and never saw that much hay, and around here its mostly round bales, I'm the only square baler near here, and its for my horses, and calves

Timothy hay.
2 tons chicken manure per acre in fall every other year.
200 lbs. per acre of 19-19-19 in spring every year.
150-180 45-50 lb. small squares per acre 1st cut. Have run over 200 already. Getting the labor is the hard part. (we use a kicker and wagons. Hay must be stored in old barns, using elevators)
Spray as needed with Banvel 2,4D. Some fields haven't needed spraying in 4 years.

I was at an auction yesterday and they had 2 JD 336s with kickers. One brought 1050 and the other 950. They were in fair shape. I thought they should've brought more than that, but this isn't hay season anymore. A 24t with kicker brought $400.
