I have an old Case 170 rake that has been very faithful in the field. However this last Friday it suddenly locked up on me, and it seems to be in the drive wheel housing although I have not had time to inspect. I can back it up freely but it locks-up going forward. The other wheel on the left side (as you sit in the tractor seat) turns fine. I have not been able to locate an operators manual or parts manual for it. Anybody have any ideas about what's going on. Thanks Dan in Iowa

Dan:
It sounds like you have two problems. The left wheel shouldn't turn freely if the right won't turn at all. Sounds like the gearbox has locked for some reason, and the ratchet in the left wheel is bad. A loud clicking sound will come from both wheels when you back up if everything is normal. Both wheels pull equally on those rakes. We have two, both on steel, both worn out, but still usable. Does yours have enclosed gears? Have you checked the eccentrics and rollers to see if something is jammed there? Feel free to E-mail me for more info. Karl.

Karl Thanks for the reply. I have enclosed gears and it is on rubber. I had to replace one of the springs in the rachet mechanism on the right hand side. The roller rake portion will turn freely. I have not had time yet to remove the gear cover on the wheels, but will look there next, anyway that was my plan.

Thanks again Dan

Karl You were right on about the rake. I pulled the left hand gear box cover and the drive chain had rusted through and broken. I now have a replacement and will reassemble.

Thanks so very much for your help.
