I just got a square baler at an auction. It is a New Holland 273. I was wondering if My 52 Farmall H would handle it? Thanks in advance and I hope to get some hay made!!!

Does one have to worry about the pto setup? I thought the H's didn't have a live pto.

They don't, but the situation can be coped with. With some experience you can get the windrow size to match the baler capacity in whatever gear you travel in. A little too small is much better than too big.

If you see things loading up, disengage the clutch, shift into neutral, and rengage the clutch until things clear out.

If you do shear a pin before you can react, be sure to clean out the pickup area (with the tractor shut down!!!) so you don't shear another one when you start up again.

Have at it. Sounds like you have a nice rig there.
Also, be sure to get the operators and parts book for the baler.

I'm here to testify! I'm a rookie farmer (green as grass) and I've only sheared 1 pin in 2 years using a non-live pto Ford 850 and a MF124 baler. Yes, live pto would be nicer, but you make do with what you've got.
