They will dig holes that can darn near snap the front wheel off a tractor. Wide fronts are bad enough, would hate to be on a tricycle.

The local airport on occasion uses shotguns. Probably you'd want at least a goose load, or #4 buck. This is assuming that you can get close enough (40 yds or preferable less). Out in the country the more traditional rifle rounds (neighborhood permitting) are .223, 220 swift, 22-250 etc.

If you don't do something to take them out eventually, you will someday wish you had.

Yeah, get rid of 'em at all costs - they'll do you a great amount of harm if unchecked. Get rid of the brush pile and all other available cover, even clumps of grass. Shoot 'em, gas 'em, flood 'em, run 'em down with any tool you happen to be driving, poison 'em, put nasty things down their holes. Make a game if it - what new nasty thing can I do to make their life unpleasant! Any of the small calibre guns will do within their limitations - .22, .223, 22-250, 243, etc. Great target practice! If your neighbors are so inclined enlist them too.

We used our liquid manure spreader that we had for hogs. Would fill up the spreader and then go fill the holes up. I ran the PTO on the tractor. If the groundhog didn't drown, he would shoot them with the .22. We only had to do that a couple of times. The last time we did it, we used water.

A friend had the wiring harness chewed up in his car by ground hogs. This was a fairly expensive repair. Get rid of them, if you have anything of value in your barn. My tool of choice is a .22-250, assuming no nearby neighbors.

I do not recomend the ball peen hammer technique described above, I ran one over with a 4 wheeler and he got up and chased me. Also do not recomend a shotgun unless your using slugs, anything smaller than #4 shot just makes'em itchy and irritable.30-06 is ovarkill but works just fine at long ranges,I'm not trying to be funny but once I started to do battle with my hogs they got smart and did'nt show themselves much. trapping is also a good option. As a person speaking from experience I know, that once they entrench themselves their the devil to get rid of.Persistance now will save you alot of repair later. Good luck

Got one with my Lumina APV the other nite, and it didn't show much interest in anything afterward, either! (Out here, we call them woodchucks - in polite company. I won't print out other names, but they AIN'T polite!)

Try Jucy Fruit gum. I had a family of 4 hogs in and around my buildings and a couple different people suggested it.
Bought ten packs, unrapped and placed gum at holes and never saw the hogs again. Six months now.

ive seen groundhogs eat 4 acres of beans in one field.!!! the best solution i've found was to throw the tractor in neutral and grab the ball peen hammer and hit the ground running!! of course i weighed 130#s less and was a teenager then too. if all else fails and you cant hit them with a .410 then try to treat them as a cash crop and make some money off them !! that'll make the little sobs dissapear faster than an inlaw who owes you money!!

Hi Frank...

Get rid of them! They will dig under everything, including your foundation...

I broke two (!) front tie rod assemblies on my 140 when the front wheel caught in one of those buggers' holes I hadn't seen while in 3rd gear at 3/4 throttle. That's when I knew it was time to get serious....I was using a .22 until that point (figured I'd give the critters a sporting chance)...after they messsed with my farmall it was war. I picked up a product at the local hardware store called Gopher Gasser. Basically a toxic "smoke bomb" that you light, throw down their holes and dump in dirt right afterwards...no more groundhogs. They may look cute (to some), but they are an extreme pain once they're established....

Cheers
Pete

They will chew through the wall of your barn, and establish dens under hay. Their holes also pose a real threat to livestock, causing broken legs which are generally terminal to horses.
I would suggest you place traps appropriately, or dispatch them through another effective method.

Hello,

Congrat's on you country home. I don't have live stock, but I agree with LazyHorse, you need them to go away. I have had trouble with them in my barns, and they will do damage. A .22 rifle or a shot gun works pretty good if you can see them, but other wise a trap is probably the way to go. I wouldn't recomend a foot trap though. My dad and I tried that before, you'll usually just end up with the foot. They will chew thier foot off to get loose. I borrowed a trap from my dad last year as I had to that I could never see to shoot, and they were digging under the cement in my barn helping it to break away. The trap is one that I could place over their hole and it clamps down on there mid section with great force and it doesn't allow them to breath. I got two with no misses. A word of caustion though. It would not be something you would want a kid, pet, or you wrist near. Good luck.

Rob

That sounds like a Conabear (sp?) muskrat trap. They work great for groundhogs, but beware, in some places, use of any kind of trap other than a live trap will get you in big trouble if the wrong people see it.
