I am still looking for comparisons among heavy duty 3 pt. roto-tillers. Among the few brands I am considering are: John Deere, Kuhn, Howse and Bush Hog. Can anyone give me some insight as to their experience with these brands. What is my best bet for a quality heavy duty tiller?

as you seen from the above posts if you are serious and dont want to waste money , get a howard rotovator. there are different series of them for different horsepowers. they make them up to 10 feet wide i think for a serious size operation. these are the ones that are used by farmers ,orchardist, forestors . you name it.these will work under tall crops, old corn stalks.

My Howard 'rotovator' is 30+ years old.. has holes rusted in the sheet metal from exposure to the salt air here... has been worked hard and put to bed wet... but still works.

Every spring the neighbors still marvel over the job it does....

I only have experience with this brand and can't offer much in the way of comments about the others. Last new one I looked at was a "Rhino" and I didn't think it looked too bad...

Someday this old girl is gonna dissolve into a pile of rust... but for now, it's still a worker.

Remember you need about 1 tractor hp per inch of width.

I made the post above too, but i wanted to say, the one HP per inch rule hasn't been my expierence. I run my 60" Rotovator with my 42 PTO HP air cooled Agco Allis tractor, and it does an excelent job! I have the selecteth gear box, and even at higher rotor speeds it never loads the tractor 100%. I feel that as long as i can open the throttle at my average speed and conditions, and the motor picks up speed that i'm not over loading the tractor. I bought this tractor new just for this Rotovator. Perhaps an older 1/2 worn out tractor wouldn't do so well?? My CIH dealer tells me that EVERY air cooled Agco Allis tractor he has dynoed, had more than the factory rated HP at the PTO. I've had one dynoed there, and sure enough it did have a few HP over the factory rateing. Robert

I think it depends a bunch on soil conditions too..

I've got a 60" Howard on a 55 hp MF 165..

Normally the tiller is 'no challenge'.. until I hit a wet spot... then the tiller will take all the old Massey will give her.

I think that HP 'rule of thumb' gives you a little extra hp to play with.. and a cushion for an older tractor that might not be quite up to snuff.

It will be a sorry day when the old Howard finally disintegrates.

I do custom Rotovateing, and have been useing Howards. I'm told that John Deere now is buying their tillers from Howard. My brother has a Bush Hog, and they are in NO way built as strong as a Howard! I wouldn't buy a King Cutter either. I've been useing my 6' Howard for about 15 years now, and other than rotor blades and maintance, it's been trouble free, untill this year when i had to replace the drive line slip clutch plates! ($18.00) If you have stones, roots or hit anything (and you will) DON'T buy a cheap tiller!! Buy a Howard or a Kuhn. The cheaper tillers just won't take the abuse a tiller is put through! After more than 15 years Rotovateing i'm sold on Howard Rotovators, and if i buy another it will be another Howard! Robert

Galen,

See my reply to your 10/5 post about KingKutter.

Also I just saw last week, a Kuhn sell at an auction for $1800. used that didn't look any better than the new less expensive KingKutter.

Good luck.
