Which takes more horsepower for the same width of cut, a flail mower or a rotary (Bush Hog). A friend of mine is using a four foot rotary with a twenty horse tractor, and wondered if he would be any better off with a flail mower. He is mowing mostly grass and weeds, not brush and saplings.

I use both a flail mower and a brush hog. The brush hog is for saplings, the flail mower for grass and weeds.

I'd say that the flail mower needs more power in the same conditions. You will get a much nicer cut with a flail, because it lifts up the grass that the tractor's tires have run over.

A flail mower in good condition is going to set you back about twice what an equivalent brush hog will cost. I like my flail mower, but I've learned to be careful what I use it for. Parts are expensive!

Take into consideration the up keep on the flail.
There are many more blades, D-rings, ect. to replace on it vs. the two blades on a rotary. Safety and a manicured cut are the two main advantages the flail has over a rotary whatever the width might be.

I dunno about the flail-vs-hog horsepower thing, but I've been running a 5' hog with an 18 HP John Deere for better than 12 years with no problems, and that INCLUDES softwood saplings up to 3"

I just don't try to do it in road gear. 1st in the heavy stuff, 4th or 5th in the light stuff.
