Most of us are probably fooling with PTO equipment from time to time. Think how an accident would change your life and the lives of your family. Then think twice about leaving the seat with the PTO turning. Please say a prayer for my Neighbor tonight.

I was given a one row corn puller that had set up for years after the owners hired man lost a hand to the snap rollers while trying to clean out some tie-vines. I'll repeat what everyone of us already knows. BE CAREFUL!
Hope your friend recovers.

Hmmmmm. Does it not say "Keeps hands out of moving parts" on the snapping rolls?

You have to watch the shafts and chains, too. On a New Idea 323, there's that long PTO with a rolling shield on it. Be award that the shield may not stop moving like it is supposed to do when something hits it. There was a man here who had his toes taken off when he stood on the picker frame by the elevator hopper trying to pull some broken stalks off the top of the machine. He accidentally tripped the elevator clutch, and his foot went through the chain and sprocket on the elevator drive.

Your neighbor will be in our prayers. I have an uncle who lost an arm in a picker almost 40 years ago. He recovered, farmed for years and finally retired as a heavy equipment operator.

He and his family are in my prayers, but thoughts, prayers, and assistance from others can only begin to help what he's lost. Reading your post actually sent a chill through me; it's been several years since corn pickers were common in this part of Indiana, but it brought back so many of the memories of others who were caught up in those machines. When I was a kid, I think there was at least one person a year in our community that was injured in a picker. They show absolutely no mercy, and can be deadly.

Any of us who operate a picker (or any other kind of machinery) owe it to our families, and ourselves, to keep the shields in place, our hands and feet away from moving parts, and to NEVER, EVER, work on it while it's running.

Will certainly remember your neighbor in our prayers. Is there another way that we can help?

They're going to set up some sort of fund at his church. I'll post details as they become available. This guy, like many farmers, was barely getting by. He has no insurance and his needs will be many. I might have guessed you guys and gals would want to help. Thanks for asking, for now just pray. We thank God he is alive he was trapped for three hours and walked for help.
