Was working on my hay baler this weekend, a 320 NH with a basket kicker. Appears that the kicker was not working right, not throwing the bales very hard and getting stuck in the up position. I was working on the kicker, thought it was the hydro valve in the back when that sucker decided to work one time -- Hit me in the chest and knocked me to the back of the shop. WHew I needed air after that, nothing hurt. I decided to take it to the dealer if it was going to kick me. The dealer said the Hydro pump and the valve are bad no pressure -- had dirt in the system that ate them up. Going to cost me $1000+ for a new pump and valve-- is that normal of these balers?? Has anyone else had to replace the pump and valve?? I thought they should have lasted longer than that. The baler is only an '83 and I replace the oil and filter every other year. Any one delt with this before??

That thrower is similar in design to the JD throwers, and yes those are normal repair costs for a bad pump and valve. You can buy another working thrower for that, at least around here. On the JD, the connection between the return pipe and the suction side of the pump is a piece of hose held on with radiator clamps. Sometimes the the pump will pull in dirt and air around the hose end (or even through the hose). I check the oil in my JD #30 ejector every 1000 bales or so for contamination. I change it based on whenever it starts to get dirty, not by time intervals.

Do you have those basket wagons out there that the bale is just pushed up into by the baler? Prolly cheaper to get a used one than fixing the thrower. There made out of sq tube and have the bale chute as part of the thing.

Don't see too many around here. Throwers are king (but the New Holland belt-type are more numerous than the green hydraulic ones). How many bales fit in one of those basket things anyway? I put 150-160 bales in my high sided wagons. The baskets I've seen look like they'd be unstable on hillsides, with that high c of g and the turntable front wheel.

I don't know how many bales they hold and we have pretty flat ground here. Years ago dad had a New Holland with belt thrower, seemed hard on bales. Real tough to get straw bales to work well and broke strings. At least one guy that uses the basket will drive to the barn when full and dump the bales near the elevator and go back for another load, Puts them in the barn next morning when its cooler.

Neighbor has one of those things, and yes he has upset is a few times on hills. Mostly kickers and high sided wagons around here, belt kickers rule but I decided to try this basket one and it has done well so far. Went ahead and had it fixed and am going to bale some corn fodder with it this week, just hope that was a one time repair. Thanks for the advice and I will keep a closer check on the oil and dirt from now on.
