I have aquired a Letz Burr Mill in the past month. It was kind of tight when I got it but after some oiling and working the wheel back and forth it works great. I shelled about 4 bushels of corn tonight with it and it works great. I searched everywhere for a tractor with a belt pulley and could not find one so after some thinking I jacked the back of our garden tractor up put a belt around the rear wheel and away I went! Belt did want to keep flying off for a while but after a while it started to work great. Has anyone used these before? Also is there anyway to adjust it or something to make it grind too, or will it just shell? Also what were the original colors on these machines? Thanks for any help. Adam Davis

I've got a Letz that I still use on occasion. Good machine! On mine the grind is controlled by a small (3") handwheel type knob at the grind head. The lever to disengage the burrs also is on the same shaft. As for color, my hopper is orange withe the rest of the machine light blue.

Watch out for that tractor differential if you do much belt work with one wheel. thats putting all the power all the time through something designed only for intermittent use

I helped put thousands of bushels of oats and barley through these mills for cattle and hog feed. Powered ours with a McCormick-Deering W-30 tractor. It was child's play for that tractor.
The colors given in other posts are accurate. They have a lever that you could quickly open and close the burrs for grinding or not grinding. Since the burrs rub the grain between them, you don't want to let the burrs run in closed position with no grain going through or it will quickly grind the cutting edges off the burrs. Always start the mill with the burrs open. Then dump in some grain and quickly close the burrs.

The hopper and main elevator are an orange, not quite as bright as Allis Chalmers, the discharge auger, transport assembly and a lot of braces are black, the cast iron burr assembly and a lot of the other castings are a baby blue. You can adjust the burrs by tightening or loosening the 3 double nutted bolts on the bowl shaped assembly at the front of the machine, otherwise it probably needs new burrs. Letz had burrs for any and all types of grain to obtain any type of grind.

You are asking me to rememeber back 45 years. Our neighbor had a Letz burr mill that was PTO driven and if I recall correctly it was about a Ford blue, not shiny but sorta flat blue. I think the hopper was a reddish or rust/red color. I know this doesn't help much but might be a start. Good luck and sorry I couldn't be more help.
