Help!! I need any information concerning this model International planter that you fellers might want to give. Such as can I plant 30,000 population with it? How reliable is it? At what ground speed should I expect to go? Thanks Don

I think my 4-row 36" is a model 56. Excellent and trouble-free piece of machinery for a plate-type planter. Get the ground tilled well, and reasonably level, even if that means you have to disc at an angle. Experiment with the gear ratios and different plates to determine your actual seed rate. I've never tried to get 30,000 per acre with mine, but I'd bet it's possible.

The best way to check it is to drop it into some sod in the barnlot that's been mowed really close. Then COUNT the number of seeds in a given length and use a calculator to get the approximate seed rate per acre. As mentioned in another post, don't push the speed too much, or you will get some erratic results. We pulled ours with a Farmall M in 4th gear at 3/4 throttle for best results, but with rain coming very soon, I planted corn once with the SM in 4th at full throttle, and it didn't do too badly! I've planted corn, soybeans, popcorn, sunflowers(special ring under plate), and garden seeds with mine. Not a modern planter, but a very dependable one!

Where do you get the special ring to plant sunflower seeds?

Jon

This was in the mid to late 70's, and a few seed companies were pushing the idea of sunflowers in central Indiana. We got the special sunflower plates (which were very thin) and the filler ring to go beneath it from the seed company when we bought the seed.

Good older planter. The thicker you plant the slower you drive with these planters. Probably around 3.5 mph. Been a long time since I was around a plate planter.

Saw a 56 4-row in pretty decent shape go for $40 at a auction would have bought it but seconds earlier bought a JD 494A for $25 in good shape.
Neighbor has a 56 he pulls with a Ford 4000 narrow front early model. Planter doesn't give him problems but the tractor does.
