David Bradley hay rake

We have an old David Bradley side delivery rake, on rubber. My Dad bought it new from Sears Roebuck & Co. in '52. It was used until about 4 years ago, when we reluctantly parked it after one of the kicker bars wore in half where it passes through the middle spider. The rake sat outside all its life, and the only color I can ever remember the rake being was rust. Dad says that the paint only lasted about a year, didn't seem to have any primer under it, but was a shade of red. The wheels are still a kind of faded green, which is the only paint left anywhere on it.
I want to restore this old fellow, as it is one of the first things that I was ever trusted to drag with a tractor, 'bout 35 years ago. I can make new kicker bars from black pipe, though drilling all those holes for the teeth will be tedious, and I can have the spiders bored out and bronze bushings pressed in to tighten things up. The gearbox is in good shape, was always kept full and the grease was changed every other year or so. If anyone can tell me what the color scheme was, what shades, were there any decals or stencils, etc, I would be eternally grateful. If you have a picture that you can scan and post or e-mail to me, or know where there is one already on the web, that would be just great. Thanks, and happy holidays to all.

I have a David Bradlely Farm Wagon that was purchased in the late '50s by my grandfather. I recently restored it. I found the David Bradley Home Page and it said that International Red was close, and for the green to mix equal parts of John Deere Yellow and John Deere Green. The color was horrid, but my dad and uncle agree that it looks right. The wagon has a red frame and green wheels. I would think that your hay rake would have the same color scheme.

Is it a wheel in line or an ofset wheel , We had an ofset wheel with the two caster wheels , every thing except the wheels was red, I would use an International Red, Wheels green , use Oliver green, Have catalogs orignaly sold through, doues yours have the 16" wheels or they the 15" used on later rakes?

Hope I'm answering your question right-
The front wheels are in line, it has caster trail wheels. The fronts are 16" I was told that the red had an orange cast to it, so I'll try that. You're right about the green, I took off one front wheel, where it was against the hub it had good paint that looked awful close to Oliver green. Thanks for the info.

Perhaps I should have been more clear on the wheel in line, The right caster wheel follows directly in back of the right front wheel and the end of the rake will reach out to pick up all the hay the wheels will run over, the other version of the rake has the right front wheel out past the end of the reel by about a foot and a half and the right caster wheel is more in line with the left front wheel and the left caster wheel will run about two feet to the left of the left drive wheel, I hope this is more clear for you but I do not remember any orange tint on the rake we had or the ground drive mower or the wagon that I still have but to make things even more confusing the wagon at new had yellow wheels instead of the green, I also had a walking tractor with no tint of orange.

OK,I see what you mean. Mine is definitely an offset model. Red/orange paint...well, I like the idea of a nice Farmall red better than something in between, so I may just go with that, and if someone corrects me at a show, so be it. As far as the lettering goes, now I can put it on and say truthfully, "It's in the book that way!" Wouldn't be any worse than a John Deere tractor with the register marks on the flywheel highlighted in yellow, and there are plenty of those, at least around these parts. Many thanks to you.

What I did not mention was that some of the parts are the same as on some oliver machinery and that I believe that Oliver actualy made some of the machinery for David Bradley and that Oliver red may have been the orignal color but that is a lot harder to find, We also had a trail type plow with same colors, As for decals I do not remember any on anything, If I get a chance to get one of my old catalogs out I will look to see if they show any.

My wife's uncle has two David Bradley rakes that he has dragged home and completely restored to full operating condition, except for paint. His are also a lovely shade of rust, but all the new nuts and bolts are nice and shiny. Because he's been so helpful to me, I found an original David Bradley rake manual on ebay and bought it to give to him for Christmas. I just got through reading it and there is no mention of paint colors. All the illustrations are either b&w photos or drawings. If I get a chance I'll ask the wife's uncle if he knows what color they should be.
