I want to convert my 12 volt positive ground generator/regulator to a single wire alternator. I'd like to get one at a junk yard, can anyone tell me what type of newer vehicles use 12 Volt positive ground systems.

Thanks in advance.

Mike

If your going that far, can't you change polarity? I turned my coil around, re-polarized the gen and swapped the cutout for a diode. With an alternator, I'd just have turned the coil. I think some of the newer coils in a plastic case don't care but mine did.

I could change the polarity, would the starter still work okay, the case is grounded to the chassis.

Your starter will work fine with either + or - ground it has field coils and will run the same direction with either polarity. The only ones that wont work are starters with permenant magnet fields.( small air cooled engines and some very new GM cars). 12v positive ground alternators are avalible but not very common, change to - ground and you can get a repacement alternator anywhere.

My starter didn't care about the polarity. What model tractor are we talking about?

It's actually a Gleaner CII combine.

it was 6v;12 v bulbs for lights.many need tickle current before they charge

We had a CII Gleaner and it had a regular delco altenator on it. I always thought it was factory, but on second thought I do remember seeing the generator pictured in the manual. Anywy it was set up on neg. ground and worked well, also altenators give a lot less trouble than generators. Good luck
