I am looking for a side-delivery hay rake.
1. When someone refers to a "4-bar" or "5-bar" rake, what does he mean? What are the bars?
2. If I'm cutting 10 acres of hay, what make/types of rake would be best buy for me?

Help appreciated.

I agree with Charlie that any of the old steel wheel rakes will be fine,,i do right about 30 acres a year and use a old New Idea rake,,as for moving one any distance,....make some ramps and roll them up on your haywagon,,thats what I do....Jim

I do about 20 acres per year with a steel wheeled 4 bar NI rake and a steel wheeled 3 bar IH rake. I can rake with either in 3rd gear with my H but you can't do any faster when you pull them on the road. The biggest problem I've had is both rakes have spent a lot of years outside and I have broken the bars a few times. I had one for parts so I've kept them running. The tines are readily available. The best news is you can get these rakes for almost no money. However if you have to move a rake a long distance or speed is important and you just aren't interested in the potential for repairs then I'd suggest spending some money and getting a newer rake.

Lynne: I love my MF model 20 3PT rake. I can pick it up a little with the pto running, and back in to corners so I don't miss any thing. Don't lift it too high with it running, because you'll tear up the universal joints. Any small rake will be OK for your acreage. Why don't you go around in your area, and talk to your neighbors, and see what works best where you live? Hope this helps; Barney

The 50's New Idea(don't know the model) I used all this summer did a good job,I don't remember but I think it's a 5-bar. It did a good job at 5-6 mph. Did a lot of double-windrowing to save time on the round baler.

1. The long bars the teeth are bolted to, running horizontally. You can probably do a better job with 5 bars, as there are more swipes moving your hay. Four bars are slower. (Actually, the bars move faster, but you drive slower...)

2. For the most part, anything in good shape. If this is a square flat field, the old 4-wheel steel rakes will work fine for $25. If you have corners & angles & stuff, the 2-wheel rakes are better of course. Brands aren't as important as being able to fine teeth & if it's in good shape mechanically. NH & JD rakes bring a premium price & you will be able to get parts, but the other brands will rake 10 acres of average hay just fine.
