Just read from a couple of days ago Bama Binders question about hay equipment. I am going to sprig tift 44 this spring on 3 acres. I know this is very small scale but I want to do it as a hobby and for some cash flow also. I live about 60 miles from Atlanta, GA and there are plenty of yuppies with horses and "gentlemen farms" around my area. Square bales sell for a good price around here, but since I am going to be on a very small scale what part of the country do I go to to get good deals on good older equipment? Most square balers around here such as the JD 24T or older NH's go for at least $1000 and up. I can get an older rake around here reasonable, but thats about it. I have a MF 175 and a MM 335 that I will use with the equipment. Since I will just be sprigging my field this spring I will probably not do any baling until next year but I am going to start my search early. Thanks for your help.

Forgot to add that along with the 3ac bermuda I will have about 5 ac of what I call trash hay to bale for mulch. There is alot construction going on around here and people get $2 a bale easy for this stuff. If I can get this equipment cheap enough and it breaks I am not going to cry too much, since I am on such a small scale, and for the most part this will be more or less a hobby operation. I know this sounds crazy but my old hobby of flying planes cost alot more than a couple grand a year, and with that hobby I knew there was definitly not going to be any return on my money.

Kenny, I'm about 85 miles east of Atlanta and I know what you're saying about the price of hay. I've got a JD 14T and 2 parts ones to go with it. Paid $500.00 for the lot it works pretty good the learning process is whats hard to make all the adjustments correctly. The "market bulletin" has a lot of balers in it especially come early spring. What will you cut the hay with? Tom in N.E.Ga.

A baler is a tough thing to get cheap. If you go where they sell cheap, you still have the expense of getting it home. With fuel prices being what they are, truck freight will eat up most of the savings real quick. I tried transporting a baler over the highway 250 miles and it wasn't fun. A year later the same baler sold at a local auction for $500 less than I paid. Go knock on some doors of some farm houses that have a lot of equipment laying around. Maybe someone has an old baler they don't use and would sell....or they know someone who does.

Ok, you have 2 tractors, and you have 8 acres to bale, that sounds better than 3. Go for it.

Around here an IH baler goes for scrap metal, and the JD / NH balers go around $500. But, average alfalfa goes $1 - $2.50 per bale, mostly $1.50. We are overloaded with hay around here. So, if you have the markets, I guess you have to pay for the equipment! :)

Kenny...I am in Birmingham and the place I am looking at is near Talladega. I have the same problem you do...I haven't seen any baling equipment go for anywhere near some of the prices I have seen people talk about (except sickle mowers and hay rakes). Everything I have seen has been priced 2-3 times what everyone on the board here say they should go for.

And just like tractors (which I have considered buying and hauling here), the cost of transportation makes that prospect almost cost prohibitive unless you own your own heavy hauling equipment and have time to chase down equipment auctions all over the US.

On the bright side, if you can store your hay and sell in Jan-Feb in this area, people are getting $2 for wheat straw and $4-5 for Alfalfa and other types of good hay. You should be able to ask $3.00 to $3.50 and get all the buyers you would ever want.

Let me know if you crack the code on the equipment deal...I'd love to have a good 14T or 24T JD for a decent price. There are some New Hollands in the area, but then people want major bucks for those...Regards...BB

Kenny-- For only 3 acres, have you a farmer friend that does custom work that will help you out. The expence of owning and working on old equpt. could be very tiresome and when you get the window of good whether you can't afford the downtime. You can still make good money selling hay with custom hire. Just a thought!! luckydog

My advice would be to hit farm auctions in the midwest. I bought a JD mower, and Farmhand rake a few years ago for $150, then bought an old IH baler for $200. The baler I didn't care for, missed a lot.So I would reccomend a NH or JD baler You can get either at a decent price.
