Just inherited an 8 ft chain harrow...spikes on one side, smooth on the other. Can you pull the spikes both ways (ie with the grain and against the grain). Would it be good to cultivate between rows in a windbreak? I don't disk between because we get enough wind to remove all the topsoil and then some. What else is it good for???

If it's like mine, you can pull it both directions with the points down. One way digs a little deeper than the other.Flip it over,it's a smoothing mat. It's used to spread manure piles, rake padocks etc.You can also use it as a harrow behind a disc,or field cultivator.Don't expect much in heavy trash or thick grass.

Only thing I've ever seen them used for is breaking up clods left after disking, and smoothing things out a bit.

Never tried pulling one point first, but I'd think it'd be awful hard on the equipment.

One of the main uses is in spreading out livestock manure, aka cowpiles. Think there was some research regarding how much forgage went ungrazed in close around the piles and it was determined that these harrows could spread those out, benefiting soil fertility in the process. For tillage pull upside down with points up for smoothing and could be pulled in points forward position if not to trashy.
