I am looking for a grain binder. I live in Iowa and my grandfather used one. I do not know the make or model. What were the more popular manufacturers and models for horse drawn grain binders in this part of the country. If anybody has one in working or restorable condition I would be interested. Any information about models to look for would be appreciated.

Not sure about Iowa, but probably the most common binder was the McCormick or McCormick Deering. I think 6 & 7 foot sizes were the most common sizes for horse drawn but I think they had smaller ones too. These are still sought after by the Amish for use today. The later models had enclosed gearing which was more reliable and long lasting than the open gears on earlier machines. John Deere also made a good binder that was pretty common. As far as finding one, watch farm auctions or look in the classifieds of farm newspapers. Here in Wisconsin I get the Wisconsin State Farmer and see binders for sale fairly often. I have a 7 foot McCormick that I bought at a local auction years ago. Look for good canvases. If you have to buy new ones from a commercial manufacturer they can cost more than the machine. Good Luck!
