Just learning: Have a Dearborn (I think) 2-bottom plow. Only has one (1) of those cutting discs mounted. What the heck is the real function of these, should I have two, should they spin, how close should they be to the actual plow, and what is that trailing wheel used for? Would like a lesson in the CORRECT function of the plow components before I attempt to restore it.

The rear wheel also keeps the plow straight, or not pulling over to the left. That is why it is angled. But you are right, mostly for depth control.

There should be a coulter for each bottom, and I run mine as far away from the bottom as possible. Generally they are wore down, and should be a lot bigger than a used plow has. Sometimes in cornstalks it's better without them, but if full size & set up right, they cut up the crop & let it turn under without plugging the plow.

Alan is right about the coulters. They make for a cleaner plowing job in most cases. Sometimes they cause problems in high grass & weeds by plugging up the plow, so they were removed on occasion. However, they are generally a good thing. The trailing or "tail" wheel provides depth control and helps keep the plow level from front to back while plowing.

That cutting disc is called a coulter, which scours the sod so the moldboard can turn it over easier(like a pizza cutter in a sense). They should spin and on my plow they are about 1/2"-1" from the moldboard, sometimes closer sometimes farther away. They pivot a little bit to the left. If you have two, use them, it won't hurt anything.
