My father-in-law just gave me a Cole brand 1 row planter yesterday. Since I am totally clueless about planters, I have a few questions.

He bought it new in 1978, and never used it. It has 2 bins, 1 for seed, and 1 for fertilizer (I think). He says it mounts on a modified cultivator (3 pt.), which I have.

Does anyone have anything like this? If so, would it be possible to post a pic so I can see how it mounts on the cultivator?

Any and all guidance is welcomed.

Thanks,
Tommy D.

Are the bins side by side? If they are then it is a duplex planter. Each side seed plates turn in opposite directions. This is what I have, you will need right and left plates for what ever you need to plant. Good news is that you can use either side by itself or together when planting a large area or with different seeds in each side for mulitple planting. Works greats, last long time. Powell tells me that I have to buy from them through a dealer. They will not sell direct, I got a bush (30 +) seed plates from my neighbor to use this year. Seed plates have differnt size teeth, and the number of teeth per plate determines the distance between seeds when planting. I have a watermellon seed plate with 2 teeth, and some beans with 16 teeth. Corn might have 6 or 8, 4 would be used with 4 in the other side. Two hoppers just means you stop to refill less offten.

good luck

Cole also sells a 3-pt hitch that bolts to the planter with 4 bolts, if you don't want to use the cultivator. And they have mounting kits to bolt to toolbars if you want to use more than one unit. There is also an accessory to put a rubber tire in front of the planter so that you don't have to hold it up with the 3-pt hitch in soft soil. The rubber wheel also will mash small lumps if your soil is not in perfect shape. Whatever you do, if you use the fertilizer be sure to keep all the shafts greased/oiled up and clean it thouroughly when done, or things will seize up pretty fast. They have added more grease fittings in recent years that were not there in 1978. In 1978 the heavy rear wheels are held in place by a pushed in pin. Replace this pin with a category 0 lynch pin so you can take it off quick and grease the axle and wash any fertilizer off the gears, they added this later also.

I have about 5 one row Cole planters but they are all much older than yours.. Your planter is a 12 MX Multiflex Planter. Write or call the Powell Manufacturing co., PO Box 707, Bennettsville SC. 29512-0707 or 1-800-845-9087 and ask for the bulletin for the above. It shows several pictures of the planter fastened to different cultivator frames. Robert
