Whats the best corn planter 2 or 4 row in your opinion and why? I know I don't like my 2-row AC, I might take it to a consignment auction or just sell it. I want a planter with rubber press wheels and maybe double-disk openers instead. I have the JD 494A which seems to be worthless( two people on this board bought one for $1), I bought mine for $25 but had 21 sets of plates with it, saw one go for $50 and one go for $200 a year ago all three are in good shape all at auctions. I need to get it in the barn and get the shafts unlocked(caked grease etc). before spring.

Hummm, 4-row equipment is 'worthless' around here because it is too small, but the 494A is about the best there is of it's era. If you are having troubles, perhaps yours it totally wore out. It should work well for you.

We have used the 7000 deere for 30 years to plant seed corn, this includes Kinze,Black Machine, New Idea, and another I cant remember, parts mostly interchange. Check opener disk dia., seed tubes, spin all wheels to check bearings, and have the meters checked on a stand. If setup well they can do an excelent job. Four row units go cheep arround here even with the moniter!

Years ago, I worked for a corporate research farm where everything had to be real shiny and pretty. I planted the corn (had to be straight and even). I put in about 400 acres a year with a 494, with 21 fields, 15 varieties at about 6 different populations. Everything was weighed off at harvest before storage for feed trials. The 494 was slow and constantly meddling with plates was a pain, but it did a great job with very few breakdowns. For under a hundred acres, I would buy one in an eyeblink.

I think the 494 - 494 A series John Deere planter is the best planter ever made, I have both and they both have double disk openers and the rubber press wheels, flexible enough to follow ground contures and low enough to fill so that you do not need a ladder like with the 7000 Deeres.

Where are you located, I'd be interested in the AC planter you have now. As for the best, a JD 7000 or IH 800 would both be good. The IH would be quite a bit cheaper to purchase and does just as good of a job.

Central Ohio, Aaron and Levi. I and debating selling it really, I might need it as a back up but about the only time I can sell my planter is springtime to get top $. Still in consideration.

We've been planting 60 acres of corn with a JD 7000 for 25 years with maintainence only repairs. They don't go cheap at auctions, but you get what you pay for. No plates to fool with either.

Where are you, I would be intrested in looking at your planter. I would give you your money back( if you are nearby). I live in Jefferson Ga. about 60-70 miles NE of Atlanta.
