Having read all the input from you guys on cutting hay with a bush hog I would like to try it. What sort of bush hog blade do you use? A grass cutting blade or a regular brush-cutting, stump jumper?

I started usin the bush hog this year for grass hay and I just use a regular grass blade and take the left shield off. works real good.

That's right it works real well.

When I started using my burrbine/Howse years ago I went up on my hay prices by $1 a bale because of the more stringent conditioning I was doing to improve the quality on my hoss hay for my regular customers.

Them yuppies bought it hook line and sinker. Once you spoil a critter to the softer sweeter hay you'll make with the bushhog they are finicky and will go to it everytime in a taste test choice where both types of hay are put out for them.

Bush hog hay conditioning is intriguing. Have you any experience with alfalfa? I can see where grass hay would come out ok, but am concerned that alfalfa would lose some (many?) leaves. Are stems shortened? Thanks for any further information.

I have'nt ever used it on alfalfa but I've been told it beats it too bad and all that's left is stems.

You don't have trouble with cutting the grass in too short of lengths if you keep your ground speed up so it can spit the grass out. It crushes the stems and softens it up real good.

I cut alot of tall bahai and some johnson grass, it does real good on tall grass without cutting the stems into short pieces.
