I recently purchased my first baler at an auction for $600.00. It is a 530 Ford. It appears to be in pretty fair shape, sheet metal is all good. The previous owner claimed the knives need sharpened and it appears that at least 2 rollers for the ram need replaced and that is it. I was wondering if there are any specifics about operating this baler I need to know, what vintage is the baler(one man at the auction thought it might be a 1970's model, and lastly what is the value of this baler(did I get fleeced or was this a bargain?

I just got done baling 600 bales, of which I do every year. I have had no problems with parts and it doesn't miss a bale. But what year is it? I don't know and would like to know. I bought mine 6 yrs ago for $500 with a kicker and the original manuel. Kept the manuel and canned the kicker.

I have just begun tinkering with trtactors and various aspects of small scale farming in the last 8 months. I have lived around or on a farm all of my life and never farmed. I have not asked one question on this site w/o getting an abundance of help and I want to say thanks to all. I hope I can return the favor sometime.

Dad bought a used 530 in about '72 or '73. It was in good shape and we tried our best to wear it out. He used it regularly until he quit hobby farming in about '80.

It was a pretty good machine. The only repairs I can remember were the nylon bushings on the feed arms, and once it got out of time somehow and broke the needles, which we brazed back and they worked fine.

It was somewhat finickey. It usually worked better on heavier hay, and it usually worked better making heavier bales. We double or triple raked the hay to make large windrows, as that seemed to work best. Sometimes it would go days at a time without missing a bale. Other days, it would miss a lot of bales until we got the chamber pressure set just right. The moisture content of the hay had a lot to do with it. Most of the misses would be in the early morning. Once the hay was good and dry, it hardly ever missed.

We used a MF 135 to pull it. My uncle had a Ford 2000, but the MF was a little heavier and it seemed to handle it better. Both tractors had 2 stage clutches, which I consider to be vital to baling.

It was the only baler I was ever around, so I can't make a comparision. However, we were always pleased with it's performance.

I bought an old 530 Ford baler two years ago for 600.00. Turned out to be a good old machine. You cannot go as fast as with a modern baler but it clicks along steady and bales good. It was terribly out of adjustment when I got it but after I finally got it back into proper adjustment it would miss about one bale in fifty. I baled 2500 bales with it last year. Those guys are right. I have not needed any parts but if I do I know they will be hard or impossible to buy.

Jeff,
You got took, unless it is in "real" good shape. Don't fret it will bale hay. The Ford 530 baler is not a Ford at all. This baler was made by Long Mfg. I don't remember the Long number, but that might be a parts source. I wouldn't spend much on it though. Most of these balers have been junked long time ago. The Ford 532 is a much baler, but it ain't good as a John Deere.

I had a Ford 532 baler a few years back and
it worked fine. Never had any trouble getting
parts from Ford. Price seems fair, good luck
with it.

Ford balers are pretty oddball in most areas. $600 is TOP dollar for any Ford baler. Do you think there was some kind of minimum bid? Maybe the person at the Auction had a deal with the auctioneer to not sell it below $500 or not sell at all. I have seen this happen before. Unless it was in a area with lots of Ford collectors, I would think only you and maybe another guy would even want to bid on it. You could get a good old John Deere or New Holland which are the best balers an easy to get and parts are readily and cheap, for that price. The parts are going to be hard to find for that Ford.

I'm not very familar with Ford bailers but based on what I've seen on bailers in general it doesn't seem like $600 is out of line if you can do the repairs you mentioned yourself. I highly recommend getting what ever manuals are available. There are lots of potential adjustments on a bailer to make or keep it working correctly and a manual will tell how to do all that stuff.
