I used to worry about that until a neighbor showed me how to double windrow (up on one side, roll back the other way on the return trip). It really doesn't matter. Works fine.

Years ago we used to mow with an old JD #5 which was 7ft and raked with a JD #350 pto rake which was 7 ft. The rake was the same size as the swath. Then we bought a moco which was 9 ft. When we tried to rake the swath with the 7 ft rake. it left a foot of unraked hay. Understand that we were laying the hay flat and not windrowing it with the moco to get faster drying times. We upgraded to a JD 640 rake shortly after we got the moco and had no further problems. My $.10 worth.

I have a couple of the old horsedrawn hay rakes I use all the time to rake hay cut by a 9 ft haybine. They can get the full width but it wouldn't work if the swath was any wider.

After you cut it, you rake it into a windrow which is about 2' wide or double-windrow put two together as I often do to cut my number of passes with the baler in half. Any old rake will do fine.

we have a 9 foot cutter and a 7 foot rake, that doesent work good.with your cutter ANY rake will work. the most common size is 9 foot, they also come in right and left.

Why doesn't your 7' rake work good with a 9' cutter? All of the mower/conditioners I've seen have angled shields on the exit side and the cut grass is put in a windrow smaller than the width of the cut. The ones I'm familiar with are adjustable so if you move each side in 1 1/2' than you windrow should be 6', small enough for a 7' rake.

If you have a 9' sickle mower that drops the grass than I can understand why it wouldn't work too good.

i cut hay with a newholland 1469 9' then use a 5 wheel rake. rake one windrow to center of the second. on the way back raked the third to the center. worked great . this year i used a pt-10 9' cutter and had to rake three trips instead of two to get the same result. its a bummer. for some reason i cannot get the pt-10 to windrow as narrow as the new holland. i still like the pt-10 because its made tough, but i will have to rethink the raking process.
