I use a 5' on my 48 8N and that seems about right. There are times (mostly when I'm not being careful) that the front end seems a little light (I mow lots of hills) but I don't feel unsafe. My opinion: I think a 4' would drive me crazy because of the extra time it would take to cover the same area, but I guess if you're not hogging much it wouldn't matter.

I agree with the others, though, an over-riding clutch is essential (I mowed for about 6 months without one...with it is both safer and easier). Also, brand probably doesn't matter, but mine is relatively light-weight and I'm doing a pretty good job tearing it up so buy a solid one whatever the brand.

good luck,
Tom

The 4' or 5' will work fine.
Get one that is rugged but brand makes no difference.

However!!!
Never run a hog on an N series without an Over Running Coupler (ORC)!!!

The lack of independant PTO makes operating an implement like a hog very dangerous. The large amount of inertial momentum of the spinning blades will drive back through the PTO and continue to force the tractor to move forward for many feet after you push in on the clutch...

A 4' or 5' is well matched for an 8N. Which is 540 rpm pto speed.

Is a 6' Bush hog too much for an 8N, with no hills.

I know folks that do it, but they are only cutting short hay with a 6 footer.
Anything with heavy thatch or 1 inch alders and I think you will find the 8N a tad under powered...
