I called my local John Deere dealer today(which is now 40 miles away since one 14 miles from me quit) for a wheel hub that was cracked on my JD 494A corn planter and said that the owners manual for it was $12.44. Good news I thought that was a good price. Then I asked about the hub.... He said it's $194.99! I said that's probaly what the whole planters worth. Forget it! Come on I know that JD is expensive but this is outrageous. I shouldn't have to shop around equip. junkyards for parts for a VERY common planter thats from the 60's. Ruined my day. Anybody else have problems with dealers like this. Maybe he marked it up 60%.

As a former parts man and fellow collector let me say this. Parts markup averages 30-35%. You may think that is too much and maybe it is. The dealers don't make the prices--the supplier does. Out of that markup the dealer has to pay for a building, employees wages, interest, freight, etc. If you had Oliver tools like us you probably wouldn't even be able to get it any more so be grateful. My adivce would be to buy another one for parts. You can find 494 planters all day for about half that I think.

I just hope you weren't too hard on the parts man. I don't know you and I am not making any accusations when I say this. It is very frustrating when someone making more money than me and driving a nice new 4X4 Diesel truck comes in and chews on me me about the price of parts when I live paycheck to paycheck and drive a worn out pickup patched together just to keep on the road because that is all I can afford. Not in that situation so much any more (changed jobs) but used to be there.

go to an industrial bearing supply house.if the bearing has a number it is usually a standard part.prices are much cheaper,no dealer markup.if you can find a frendly auto parts man,he might be able to see if a truck or car hub uses the same bearings.(cross ref.the nos)you can probably find something else that will fit much cheaper.you would be suprised at what will swap with little or no alterations.

Just remember that manufacturers don't have to supply parts after 10 years of cancellation of product. The fact that John Deere maintains inventory on these parts is something else. For low volume part sales it is hard for Deere to get anything made at a "bargain" price. They have to pay their supplier and make enough money to warrant stocking it.

It's not just planter parts. I had to get a replacement wheel hub and bearing for a JD606 brush cutter a year ago and had well over $200. From JD's point of view re: your planter, a new planter is what, $50,000? At that price for a new machine, $194.99 is but a very tiny % of the cost of the planter and thus seems reasonable at least to JD. JD doesn't sell new 494s anymore so they price replacement parts like you had a new machine. Works like that for 50 year old tractors too. IMHO ALL of the mfrs do this, not just Deere.

I have found big differences in markups, 15-20% difference in price compared to dealers in more rural areas 150-200 miles away. I am in a built up area and they tell me they have high overhead, taxes, wages etc. and have to charge more. What they don't realize or care about is I have to sell at the same terminal markets for the same prices as the guy out in the boonies who buys for 20% less.

Back in the 80's the hub was $80.00
I got a used one for $30.00 off of a parts planter back then.
That is why I have one for parts now.
