I'm considering trying to find a disc mower, What do I look for, what are their weak points, what should look at when buying a used machine? Thanks in advance.

Rich

just to add my two cents, as stated earlier, general appearance is a good place to start. If possible, stay with a brand name, parts are always available. I purchased a used New Holland several years ago and have had great luck with it. Oil seepage on an older model does not always mean expensive repairs. Oil seals and gaskets for my machine were under $100 and with a $6 service manual, repairs were a breeze. For your info, Kuhn mfg. made all of the New Holland cutters. Kuhn is French, and metric!

I bought a disc mower last year and found I could not get the blades for it. Luckily blade carriers from a different mower could be adapted.
Any sort of oil leak from the bar would be a bad sign as the gears can fail very fast if the oil is not up to level. Also check the oil looks clean.
The safety covers etc are very important. It cuts like dream in tangled and lodged grass though.

As best I have found there are 3 styles of cutter bars: shaft, and 2 types of gear (I'll use the term few and many). I have both the shaft (New Idea brand) and few gear (Bush Hog brand). I've also had the "many" (John Deere). With lots of custom work in rocky ground the shaft drives are less cost to repair but need it more frequently. When shopping new the last time I went with few gear, least cost (Bush Hog in at the time), have had good service. In used look for discs at right angles, no plan in the discs, and general appearence. As a rule of thumb I avoid used disc mowers as any failure in the cutter bar can be VERY expensive.
