I have a 85 Same that has 540 pto and have looked at a chopper that is 1000 pto. My question is that at the local hardware store they sell a converson pto that slips over the 540 and makes it 1000. Is this ok for the chopper? am i going to screw some costly up? The tractor has the power to run the chopper and pull a box but I can't find a 1000 pto shaft for it. thanks

That machine had a 1000 PTO unit put on it for a reason. Don't use adapters to match PTOs, use the correct tractor needed. I've known several people that have tried to use those adapters, they just cause many more problems than they solve. One guy even got hurt when he put too much power through one and it broke, sending the pieces flying. Every major manufacturer has warnings saying not to use adapters on either their tractors or machines. They do not put those warnings out because they want to sell bigger machines, rather they do it due to safety reasons.

I have used these adapters before. Your speed will be slower. Check the horse power rating of the adapter, you may have more power than the adapter is rated for and for goodness sake get one that you can keep tight or you will wallar your splines on the pto shaft. Make sure you have the travel in the pto shaft of the chopper so if you go up a grade it doen't bend your pto shaft on the tractor. BEEN THERE!! luckydog

I don't see a problem other than possibly running at slow ground speed as the chopper designed for 1000 RPM is turning 540 RPM. I would be concerned if you're attempting to run a rated 540 RPM implement at 1000 RPM. Nasty things can happen in this case!

If it chops, it chops. It might turn slower, larger cut, etc, but u basically aren't hurting anything

Does the adaptor actually speed up the pto to 1000rpm, or does it just adapt the splines to fit? Probably won't chop right if you are running the chopper at 540rpm.

Check out the chopper model, a lot of machines can be switched over on the machine end to either speed with a gearset at their end of the pto shaft. Maybe a kit is available.

You are correct Paul. The adapter does nothing to rpms it mearly adapts spline counts so that inappropraite machines can be linked togetner. Should only be used if the follow up gearing can be adapted to compenstate and have the machine operate at the designed speed. Good cautions posted here! Dick

With just adding an adaptor (not inserting a 1000rpm shaft) the chopper will still be running at 540. I would be very concerned that this would mean a much slower ground speed, coarser chop, and maybe plugging or the knife drum. I've run a blower this way but never a chopper.
