I want to put some sorgum seed in with my corn to increase tonnage for silage for my beef cows. Will the planter seperate the seeds or will it keep them mixed. don't want to do any major chages because this is my cusions planter.

I can remember my Dad planting sorgum along with silage corn in the 60's as a way to get a higher sugar content for fermentation in the silo. He had a planter with plates. I seem to recall the sorgum seed did shift toward the bottom of the seed bucket. I think Dad would occasssionally mix it to keep spread out more.

With the blow planters you will need a milo drum. Plant 4 or more acres of corn and then switch drums and plant how many acres of silage cane. Alternate rows when chopping. Do it a lot around here.

I'm not really sure, this is just a guess, but my guess is, the smaller kernels will fill the cells in the planter plates, and not let the corn kernels in. I'm wondering if you won't end up with strips one and then the other. I also wonder about the maturity times of each crop. If you could plant with equal maturity times. It sure sounds like a decent idea though. Why not just split the field and put each in?

Ron: Are you sure that this two-crops-in-the-same row has merit? Is? Has? anybody done it in your neighborhood? Seems to me you will increase tonnage with more water in the plants, but I wonder if you will really increase TDN. Why not plant a corn variety designed to yield more forage and less grain? I can understand that you want to reduce the energy for the cows, cause corn silage is a mighty expensive food source for common beef cows. Good Luck. Mike-Iowa

My great uncle did it but he had a plate planter at the time. He said there used to be bean boxes on planters and there was a certin kind of bean that would climb the corn stalk and this would increase protein and made great cow feed. Now spraying killed the bean plates so they quit puting them on.
