I'm looking into hay tedders, because the fella's aroung here say tedders can do 2 7's at once and save alot of time. I'm running with a NH 256 rake now. I would like some opinions, I bale 30 acres of alfalfa and is there any tricks to using a tedder. Thanks in advance!

Sam

If your 256 is in good shape I would add a tedder. I didn't belive the difference, but... In '97 I got an 8' tedder at an auction(cheap). This year I just bought an 18'. Having the tedder and rake gives you flexibility. You can buy a good 8' for 1200 and a good 18' for 2700. The dual purpose NH will be about 2x that. Given a value of 1000 for the rake you are money ahead plus, I don't think you can ted and rake in 1 operation. If the crop doesn't need to be tedded you would have the rake option. Plus, I really like the twisting action of the 256, my square baler feeds better with it. I'd be afraid that the combo unit would be like a wheel rake, just bunching the hay. I had a wheel rake and used it twice.

I want to thank you all for the info. I checked tne NH web site and saw the dual action the new tedders provide. Since I a one man band when it comes to haying anymore, this new tedder will save me alot of time.

Again thanks

Sam

Using a tedder saves me a day easy when putting
up hay. The main problem with tedding alfalfa is
leaf loss. It's best to tedd it at dusk or early
morning when there is some moisture on the leaves
I have a Kuhn tedder that takes two 7 foot rows
at once, works great and I couldn't do hay with-out anymore.

Sounds to me like your confusing what a tedder does vs a rake. You need the rake to get the hay into a windrow the baler can pick up. Some of the older racks could operate as a tedder but a real tedder works a lot better. The tedder can lift the hay off the ground and spread it out to get better drying. Its often worth a half day saved on drying time. I'm not into the newer equipment so I don't know if you can get a tedder that can also rake.

some insight on the nh 254 rake /tedder. i bought a used one about 6 years ago, after a short learning curve its has become my favorite piece of haying equipment. they still bring more money than conventional rakes, but if you can find a good used one they are worth the money. they offer a lot of flexibility in one machine and has been reliable.
Smooth hay fields and a little maintenance go a long way. only draw back i can see is a limited tedding width of around 13 feet.... good luck
