By far the best way to deal with sod is with a Rotovator!!! Don't you believe those that say green sod can't be dealt with in the first year!! I custom Rotovate green sod all the time, and two trips over it, (a week or two apart)and it will look like it has been worked for years!! This is why many of my customers call me, and leave their plow, disc. ect. parked in a hedge row! Robert

Arround here (in burley tobacco country) where we need a seed be suitable for transplaning we "slab" ground. After plowing in Feb. I like to wait until mid April thenpull a "drag" accross the field. Some people use 3 crossties bolted together, my dad uses guardrail sections 3 thick and bolted 3 long. I use a 12'x6" section of I beam bolted to two 6"x12' steel pipes filled with concrete. After slabbing we wait a couple of weeks and then disc with the same drag behind the disc.

Um, the rain will do it for you, don't know why you are trying to beat the rain?

Around here, the best is to plow in the fall, let winter & rain mellow out the soil over winter. But then, if you're doing field work now, you mustn't have much for winter! :)

If its sod from living grass you will never get it broken up very well the first year. It helps if you don't disk or drag very deep as it will turn up more sod. The best way is to kill the grass first, then plow. It also helps if you can plow sod early and let is sit a few weeks before working it. A good plowing job helps with sod as well.
