Cultivator on Farmall H

Although I'd like a small Farmall, have no money for A,B,or C tractor with cultivator. I do have two H tractors, but no cultivator attachment. This season, we plan on ornamental corn, popcorn, some kind of flowers (bulb type for cut flowers), and maybe starting asperagus. We have 3 acre field. We don't use chemical fert or herbicides. Last year we weeded by hand. big job. Questions:

1. would Farmall H work good with a mounted IHC cultivator?
2. Which model cultivator would be good ? (I'm thinking of 1 or 2 row cultivator).
3. Shields needed? Flat or rolling best?
4. How do you space your rows? I'm planning on 28" or 35" (my drill is 7" spacing).
5. How the heck do you find an IHC cultivator setup with all the parts?
6. Have you or DO you operate this type of cultivator operation? what crop? does it work good?

thank you for your comments and help. RW

The cultivators for a 300 won't fit the H. I hope you have hydraulic on your H because that is a lot easier. I grew up on an H and cultivated corn when I was only about 8 years old and it was a giant struggle to lift the cultivator sections at the end of the row since our tractor did NOT have hydraulic. It was good ol' armstrong lift. It's not an easy job to mount the cultivators, especially since you will have to move both rear wheels out to accommodate your row width. That may be what your friends were talking about when they said it's an all day job.

A 3 point cultivator is commonly used now because they are so easy to hitch and go. But I don't think they do anywhere near as nice a job as the old H did. I have a 350 hi-utility with a 3 point cultivator and your fears about doing damage to your crop are well founded. It's a trade off- hard to mount, good job. Easy to mount- not so good job.

By the way, where are you in Wisconsin? Although I don't live there, I have a small farm there and it's my hobby place.

I use cultivators on my H every year to cultivate about 5 acres of field corn. IH made mounted, 2 row cultivators for the H and you can find them around in junk yards and lots of parts in junk yards for them. It will take about 30-45 minutes for one person to mount them. You need hydraulics on your tractor. You may have a problem finding shields as a lot of them have rusted away. I plant in 36 inch rows. The cultivators can be adjusted to a point for different rows but I don't know if you can change them enough for your rows. The biggest drawback is once the cultvators are on the tractor, the tractor can't be used for anything else. The drawbar has to come off for the rear section to attach. If tying up your tractor is a problem, you could add a 3 pt hitch and buy 3pt hitch cultivators. The cultivators do a good job of cultivating one you get them on the tractor.

Thanks for the info Charlie. I can plant 35" rows no problem. Some have said it takes all day to attach a mounted cultivator, you say 30 - 45 minutes; you have actually done it, thanks for the info.

It looks like the H drawbar system is made for easy on-off. I don't see a problem with removing it or tying up the tractor, as I always have other tractors available.

I do see 3pt cultivators at auctions for $60 - $200 (I also have a JD 2440 with 3pt). Are these rear mounted cultivators as accurate as the old IHC mounted cultivators? I'm afraid I'll have less control with a rear mounted unit and will end up hitting the good guys along with the bad ones.

Have you used a rear 3pt cultivator? What do you think of them?

I've never used a rear mounted cultivator. However thats about all that has been made to my knowledge for some time so lots of folks use them. It is possible to take the rear section off the H, reattach the drawbar and leave the front sections on the tractor. The rear section covers the rear wheel tracks and catches a small area in the middle where the two front sections can't come close enough together. Reattaching the drawbar is much easier done with two people. Feel free to email me if you have more questions. I grew up with these things and still use them.

Last time I knew my father had a set of H cultivators in the barn. They probably are for sale here in NH. Let me know if you are close enough that they would be of interest

BFarr, thanks, but I'm in Wisconsin. Charlie, we'll keep in touch. I just placed an ad in farm paper for an IHC cultivator, HM-238 or whatever shows up. I'll get owners manual if possible and have several references that show IHC cultivators, but your help will probably be needed. Experience is the well of all knowledge.

GREAT books that show old IHC black & white photos are the FARMALL MODEL H PHOTO ARCHIVE edited by P.A.Letourneau - also model M book. I'm sure these are available from tractor book people. thanks again for your help. RW

I have a 2/4 row front cutlivator that fits on my 300, I think the H might have the same mounts? I'm here in southern Minnesota, but someone else asked for it first, gotta check with him again. Also mine has the 2-point rear.
