Dump wagon

Father-in-law has a wagon w/hydraulic hoist that I'll use to haul rock from the quarry as I get time. I have a 560 Farmall, and he used it with his 460, so connections are alike. Question: there's only one hose to the cylinder and all the other hydraulic cylinders on the tractor are double acting (connections on both ends.) I haven't hooked it up yet, (so dumb question?), but will the wagon come back down, or do I need to hook up a return hose? (There is a second fitting on the back end of the cylinder, but it's plugged off.

Make sure the wagon is level from side to side when you dump. A friend of mine almost killed himself when he tried to dump a wagon on a slope and it rolled over. Luckily the hitch twisted instead of pulling the tractor over.

On your 560 you need to switch the hyd. valve over to single acting. Down between your feet below the dash panel there are 2 or3 1" dia. Shafts with flats milled on them and a pointer. You take a Cresent wrench and turn it 1/4 turn to either S[single] or D[double] depending on the type of ram you are using.

Don't know about IH, but you have to change a little valve or a plug on the old JD's to convert the tractor to single acting hydraulics. Otherwise, when you move the hydraulic lever to dump the wagon, the tractor is trying to pump fluid through the other line and the relief valve squeals.

Yes the box will come back down, the other port on the cylinder is for down pressure which you don't need.

Joe wins the prize for best answer. Good description of procedure, I never new what those flats were for. Makes me want to run out and buy a 560. Thanks. By the way how much rock you plan on hauling per trip? D-2

I'll haul probably 2-3 ton per trip (6 ton running gear, great tires, small wagon and only 4 miles round trip). I never thought about changing the valves on the steering column. I only learned about them by accident, when my loader wouldn't raise. Thought I'd lost seals, and someone else suggested I check these first. I'm going to try this thing out when I get home tonight.
