WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN SOMEONE REFERS TO A "FIVE BAR" OR "THREE BAR" HAY RAKE?
ALSO, WHAT SORT OF OLDER, CHEAPER, MAKE/MODEL OF SIDE-DELIVERY RAKE SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR? WE WILL DO ABOUT TWENTY-THIRTY ACRES PER YEAR.

Lynne; The bars are what the teeth are fasten too. The more bars the better it will pick up finer material. I have used pto driven models, ground driven models and the newer wheel rake models. Vicons and Columbia are wheeel rake brands I have used. My favorite choice is a wheel rake. Simple they do excellent job of cleaning the ground and I feel have lot less shatter loss. They do not work as well if you make lots of corners. I make end rows. Rest of field is straight swaths. I just bought a used columbia brand 6 wheel rake for $550.00 dollars. These models you can also hyd lift over windrows. Bar rakes don't have hyd lift. M&W also builds one,Kelderman does too. M&W has the better teeth. They will last longer, are bigger diameter. They will fit on a Columbia brand too. You just need to set them correctly. Let me know if I can be of more help

In this market one of the best bargains is on the New Idea 4 bar rakes. Used about 500. The more bars, the more teeth, the more teeth, the better the rake collects fine material like late season alfalfa and blade grass.

The newer New Holland & John Deere rakes bring top dollar. Older (#55) New Holland rakes are pretty popular aroud here, under $500 & work well. Check out the drive mechanism well, chain-drives can be a real pain sometimes, check any for waer. Otherwise, see that you can get teeth for it like the other person said.

The real old 4-wheel rakes make windrows too, but be aware it is about impossible to back up with them, not very handy. But if you have a big flat square field, they sell for about $30....

5-bar or 3-bar just means the number of horizontal bars that hold the rake teeth that move down and over. Brand of a older hayrake really isn't that important as long as you can find new teeth to fit it. Shouldn't need that many other parts if you take good care of it. You could check the archives under hay rake maybe.
