One of the few bargains in new equipment arround here is a 256. I bought one new last spring for 3800.00. Since 1998 I've sold 6 used ones for 1300-1700 and they were WELL USED. I got them at auctions for 800-1000 and put paint on them and teeth. We run 3 and wouldn't trade them. Bought a 3pt rake and used it 2 times, didn't give the twist list a 256 to the windrow. Tedders, except name brands, usually sell here used 700-850 for 8-9' and 1750-2200 for 17-18'. Usually 300-500 is a big price on any sickle mower. (All central KY prices).

I have found 2 separate MF 3pt pto driven hay rakes, one in California, the other in Idaho. Both were priced at $500. Didn't buy either one because of the distance. I've been told that if they're in good shape they should be worth $300-$500. I have a JD sickle mower model #9 that was given to me. I've put about $150 in parts into it and it works fine as long as I keep it out of the fence. I'm not sure, but I believe the NH256 is a ground driven rake. I like the 3pt pto driven better for my application because I don't have a lot of room to maneuver. With the 3pt rake I can pick it up and position it where I want it before engaging the pto.

Just to be contrary, there are very few pto 3-point rakes around 'here', wheel drive is much simpler & easier to hook up & go. That 256, in good condition, is top-of-the-line around here, & would bring $1000 or more. The pto rake would sell a little above scrap price. Not so familiar with JD mowers, but I believe that's a good working unit.

I agree with Paul about the NH 256 rake. Should bring $1000 or more at auction. They're a good piece of equipment. I have one and the only repairs to it are new teeth whenever one is broken. Remember to grease it also.
