Hi, The IH 45 and 46 have a reputation of eating PTO units. Be careful.

I been baling for the past two years with an 8N, a Bush Hog, a Ford rake, and an IH 46 baler. The one suggestion I have is if you have trouble with the baler knotting, don't do what I did and spend a year tweaking it. Hire someone to come out and within 10 minutes he’ll have knotting perfectly ( best $100 I ever spent ). The problem with mine was the timing was out on the disc on the left knotter causing it just to miss the knife. If you adjusted the knife to cut, the knot wouldn’t tie. Also, like the last guy said, dull knife blades will cause knots to pull out and a dull plunger blade will cause undo strain on the baler.

Enjoy, it’s a great baler and will last years with care.

Want a Photo copy of manual? If the slides on plunger get worn will not tie.

I use a model 46 for baling about 2000 bales per year and have owned it for about 13 years. Mine was in very good shape also when I got it. I got the set of manuals from Binder Books. I've only had 2 problems with mine. Once I had tying problems and it turned out the cutting knives were so dull it wouldn't cut the twine. I now sharpen them every year while getting the baler ready for the season. The other problem I had was one side was missing about every 30th bale. Using the manual I found out 3 of 4 springs that work the hay retainers were missing. I replaced them and it hardly ever misses a bale. I think its a very good baler.
