Hi,
Depends on what kind of dirt you are turning and how fast you want to ride. Generally 20HP per bottom is about right. Give her all she's got and if need be go to a lower gear. Have Fun!!

85 hp will pull it. A good steerable plow here will bring 35 dollars.

The 145 4-16 & the 85 hp Ford 7700 2-wheel drive plowed for years & years on the rolling hills of yellow clay here. At times I ran straight 4th gear, at times (in the cement I guess?) it ran in 2nd. Mostly 3rd. Soils don't get much worse, that should be a good match for you.

Depends on where you are, and how deep you want to go! In general I have found in this area, with soil a mix of loam and red banks, it takes about 1.25 pto hp per inch of plow cut at about 9-10 inches deep. I know a few guys who farm in lighter soils who only figure about 1 hp per inch at 7 inches deep. I would say in most cases you should have little trouble, but, I am only experienced with 2 wheel drive tractors! In any case, good luck with your plow. We pulled them for years and they do a good job, but can be a real pain in cornstalks!!

Make sure your shear bolt or safty trips are good, you have almost twice the tractor you need. If you hook a big rock or root you could ruin your plow.

Unless you plan on plowing cement, you should be able to plow anything, in any gear with 85 horses pulling 4-16's. Lots of people know absolutely nothing about everything, and don't hesitate to be an expert on any and all things.

There's one field of cement on my farm that makes my 90HP 4020 grunt with a 4 bottom 16" plow at 8 inches deep. No other field on the farm has soil nearly as hard to plow.
