How much HP do I need to run a NH273 or so baler? Do I have to have a live pto? I have an old fordson major w/o a live pto and was wondering if this would do the job without having to get out the big tractor.

Hi, I've baled thousands of bales with a 273 and a 3000 Ford. It does an excellent job. About LPTO, I've never heard of anyone who liked making baled hay with just a standard PTO.
Good Luck,
Roy

We baled more bales than I want to think about, when I was a kid on the farm with a JD 50!

I've baled many thousands of bales with a 14T john Deere baler with a wagon towed behind and pulled by an H Farmall. It had plenty of power to pull the rig in third gear except in the most extreme circumstances. No live power, but we became adept at shifting between plunger strokes. Your Fordson should have plenty of power unless it is in need of repair.

Wow, you must have small windrows? I use a NH 270 with an IHC 300 (basically an H with a live pto...) and it works great - but I don't think I've ever baled in 3rd gear, generally more 1st than 2nd...

Live pto makes baling easier, but the Fordson should manage ok.

I bale hay all the time with a Farmall M which is only about 32 horsepower. It also doesn't have a live PTO. A live PTO is very nice to bale with but a lot of hay has been baled without one.

When I was young the tractors never had live PTO. We baled lots of hay and straw, you learned how to do it. When I was too small to throw bales I drove the baler so it wasn't that dificult.
