I picked up a 7' Ford 501 sickle bar mower last summer (not in time to use it for haying). Over the winter I replaced all of the rock guards with new ones (old ones were really worn) and put new knives on the bar. When I put the bar back into the mower, there is 1/4" to 3/8" of a gap between the knives and the ledger plates on the rock guards. The manual says to adjust this by applying a hammer to the knife clips to bend them down. Is there anything else that I should do before I start pounding away?

Ken, when you replaced the blades did you use rivets or those bolts? I tried some of those bolts last summer on my 501 and some of them rubbed on bottom of the rock guards which kept the blades off of the ledger plates. Just a thought. Festus

Ken - Check to see for sure what is holding the knife up off of the ledger plates. The clips should only keep the knife from coming up when cutting, not push the knife down against the leger plates. If you have to, and I know this is a pain in the neck, pull the knife out of the bar and put the bar back on. Sight along the top of the leger plates and make sure they are in the same plane. Check especially where the bar attaches to the frame. I didn't on my Model 37 Deere sickle and found out the hard way what happens when the knife doesn't rest on an even surface. It breakes the knife. I went cheap and borrowed a (slightly) used set of New Holland guards that didn't have leger plates. It cut well for about an hour then all that flexing at the drive end broke the knife across a rivet hole. I put the correct guards on and haven't had any more problems.
